Safari in the Northwest

Tucumán - Salta – Jujuy

Northwest Argentina. An area full of contrasts where the visitor becomes submersed in the historics roots of Latin American civilization, in a landscape of valleys, gorges and small towns where colonial architecture has melted with the modern life.

Day 1 - Salta

Reception atl local airport. Transfer to Selva Montana Hotel. City tour of Salta and its rich architecture, including Central Church and the Cabildo (old city hall) both built in the XIX century, and panoramic view of the city from San Bernardo hill. Return to the hotel.

Day 2 - Salta / Quilmes

Continental breakfast. Departure on the Movitrack, unique in this country for its big sliding roof. The roof allows people to enjoy the trip in fresh air with a complete panoramic view. The open roof also makes possible to observe wild animals, exotic vegetation and impressive landscapes so close that the trip really merits the label "Safari". We cross the Lerma Valley to get to the Escoipe Canyon and the Cuesta del Obispo (Bishop's Slope). On the Recta de Tin-Tin we travel through the National Park of the Cardones to reach the old village of Cachi, placed at the foot of the Nevado de Cachi (6380 m). On a picturesque little road we skirt the fertile valleys of the Calchaqui River through little villages such us Molinos, Angastaco and San Carlos, and later we cross the impressive Arrow's Canyon (Quebrada de las Flechas). We spend the night at a fascinating hotel placed close to the Quilmes ruins: Hotel Ruinas de Quilmes.

Day 3 - Quilmes / Salta (Finca San Antonio)

Continental breakfast. We first walk to the Indian ruins and then continue our trip with the MoviTrack to Cafayate to know and "taste" the main activity of this valle y, the wine production. On our way back to Salta we travel through the amazing landscape of the Quebrada del Río de las Conchas (Conchas River Gorge) with its fascinating rock formations that you will be able to enjoy from the opened roof of the MoviTrack and visit Finca Santa Anita, a traditional goat dairy farm. Arrival at Salta and accommodation at Finca San Antonio, which belongs to a traditional family of Salta city and combines its history with comfort. Dinner.

Day 4 - Salta (Finca San Antonio)

Continental breakfast. Day at leisure to enjoy the estancia, walking around its citrics and tabacco plantations, horseback riding or swimming at the pool. Dinner.

Day 5 - Salta / Tilcara

Continental breakfast. Early departure on another Movitrack "safari" following the tracks of the famous "Train to the Clouds". We stop several times at the impressive valley "Quebrada del Toro" (Bull’s Gorge), until we reach San Antonio de los Cobres (3775 m). Then we continue the trip on old route 40 through the Puna till the big saltlakes, the "Salinas Grandes". On the way we often stop to take pictures of the vast landscape and the Lamas. After crossing a 4000 m high pass, we go down on the spiral-like route of Cuesta de Lipan through the valley of Purmamarca till the historical same-named village, where the Seven Colours Hill builds an attractive background. After a walk through the nice village with an important handicraft market, we move on to Tilcara, another village placed in the middle of the famous Quebrada de Humahuaca, where we are going to have dinner and spend the night.

Day 6 - Tilcara / Salta

Continental breakfast. In the morning, walk towards Tilcara ruins, on the top of a little hill and surrounded by big cactus. Continue to Humahuaca Village, crossing the Capricorn Tropic. We will take a walk through the picturesque center of this village. In the afternoon, return To Salta through the valley until we reach San Salvador de Jujuy city, where we will visit the most peculiar places. Visit to a traditional farm in Salta, located in the middle of subtropical vegetation. Arrival in Salta. Accommodation at Hotel Selva Montana.

Day 7 - Salta / Buenos Aires

Continental. Brakfast. Transfer to local airport to board flight to Buenos Aires.
